| IntelliDOT Corporation, a leading provider of wireless handheld, barcode point-of-care (BPOC) solutions to hospitals, today announced that it is collaborating with Cisco, the market leader of enterprise wireless LAN (WLAN) infrastructure, to develop a new mobile solution for clinical asset location in hospitals. The initiative is based on an enhancement of the wireless, handheld IntelliDOT CAREt® System barcode point-of-care (BPOC) solution and integration with the Cisco Context Aware Mobility solution, via an open API that runs on the new Cisco 3300 Series Mobility Services Engine. “With the rising cost of healthcare, hospitals need to maximize efficiency and equipment utilization without compromising patient safety,” said Thomas G. Klopack, President and CEO of IntelliDOT. “With the Cisco Context-Aware Software providing contextual information to IntelliDOT CAREt medical applications on a wireless handheld unit, staff have the real-time information they need to locate and utilize their handheld BPOC devices and other medical equipment in the most safe and efficient way.” The Cisco and IntelliDOT co-developed wireless BPOC solution will help hospitals overcome the challenge of quickly locating critical equipment and resources, including IV infusion pumps, portable vital signs monitoring equipment, handheld electronic thermometers, wheelchairs, and even patient medical charts and medical personnel. Nurses will eventually be able to click on an IntelliDOT icon within the Cisco wireless application to locate needed supplies and equipment using the IntelliDOT handheld device instead of logging onto a network station, thus saving precious caregiver time. The solution will use IntelliDOT’s patented DOT technology that nurses can simply scan with the handheld device to display the locations of the specified equipment or resources. “We expect this new solution to increase patient safety since caregivers will be able to locate their handheld devices, and eventually all tagged equipment including life-saving equipment, such as IV infusion pumps, faster and easier,” said Klopack. “On the business side, we believe this new BPOC solution will provide more effective monitoring of high-cost medical devices to deter theft and increase utilization, resulting in cost savings for the hospital.” The IntelliDOT module will operate over a hospital’s existing 802.11 WLAN, and will communicate with the Cisco Mobility Services Engine, which will gather resource position data from access points on the WLAN and make it available for display on the IntelliDOT handheld unit via the Cisco API. “Cisco and IntelliDOT will break new ground in leveraging contextual information via our open API for clinical asset location in the hospital, bringing together both technical and healthcare expertise to deliver greater patient care,” said Ben Gibson, Cisco’s senior director of mobility solutions. “We are excited about the potential caregiver workflow efficiency and patient care benefits that the integration of networking technologies and healthcare information systems such as IntelliDOT BPOC solutions will be able to provide. Hospitals will be able to take advantage of advanced wireless services with the added benefit of improved caregiver responsiveness.” About IntelliDOT® Corporation IntelliDOT is a leading provider of wireless, handheld, barcode point-of-care (BPOC) solutions that connect to any healthcare information system to improve patient safety and nurse workflow.
